Chicago school responds to anti-Semitic bullying

Chicago Public Schools has found itself in the middle of a controversy over its handling of anti-Semitic bullying of an eighth-grade boy by other students at Ogden International School on the Near North Side.

Three boys were suspended and apologized, but the victim’s mother and other parents are demanding that the students be punished more severely, with some arguing the bullying should be labeled a hate crime. The issue has received widespread attention, including from the Anti-Defamation League.

According to CPS, the boy’s mother contacted the school’s principal May 20 to let him know her son had been subjected to anti-Semitic comments from classmates and that students had been playing a video game that “had been altered to include offensive language.” Read More…
