New Study Shows Trauma Centers Riskier for Uninsured Patients

Guest blog post courtesy of Burke & Eisner, PA

Researchers in Boston who were investigating the difference in treatment of trauma patients based on different demographics have uncovered an unsettling statistic: patients without medical insurance are 80% more likely to die from a traumatic injury than those with coverage.

The study considered factors such as patients’ race, gender, age and type and severity of injury, as well as the different types of medical coverage available.  Equally as concerning is the fact that those covered by Medicare have a 56% higher chance of death.

What is to be made of this study?  Perhaps it’s time to examine the kind of treatment and priority of such that is being given to patients of different backgrounds.  Although the study did not specifically reveal the reason behind the discrepancy, the results clearly indicate that doctors are not providing patients with fair and unbiased treatment, and those who aren’t fortunate enough to have medical insurance are not receiving the same standard of care as those who are insured.

The fact is standard of care is something that all patients should expect, regardless of background, income, or any other factors.  When this standard is not adhered to, medical malpractice is much more likely to occur.  This is particularly significant because according to the US Census Bureau, there are currently 45.7 million people in this country that do not have insurance.

Perhaps those fighting for healthcare reform should examine and address these facts, rather than focus on the end result of medical malpractice claims.  It’s time to tackle the real problem.  In the meantime, we can expect to see continued cases of wrongful death lawsuits and medical malpractice cases.
