Worker Dies in Chicago Construction Accident

A construction worker has died from injuries after a recent construction accident on the Near North Side of Chicago. The worker, 46-year-old David Varga from Lockport, was at a construction site on the 1400 block of North Ogden Avenue when a concrete wall fell directly on him. He was taken directly to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but remained in critical condition until his death less than four hours later.

Construction site accidents result in some of the most serious workplace-related injuries in the nation. In fact, the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) calls the following construction hazards the fatal four because of their deadliness, frequency and unpredictability:

1. 1.      Electrocutions. Electrocution kills and injures hundreds of workers every year because of issues like overhead power line accidents, improperly grounded lines, incorrectly used equipment, and faulty or broken extension cords.
2. 2.      Striking. Instances of workers being struck by heavy equipment, moving vehicles, or falling or swinging materials or cargo account for at least 10 percent of construction-related fatalities annually.
3. 3.      Pinning. Although not quite as common, workers getting caught between objects, such as vehicles and walls, is the cause of a significant number of very serious injuries and fatalities every year.
4. 4.      Falls. One of the most common and deadly construction hazards, falls from high places, such as ladders, scaffolding and roofs, make up at least one-third of construction-related fatalities.

Construction accidents are often preventable. It’s up to construction companies, supervisors and the workers themselves to maintain safe environments and prevent injuries and deaths.
